Plataran Announces Ecotourism Festivals, in Celebration of Indonesia’s Treasures

Kamoro Art Exhibition & Sale 2021: A Collaboration Between Plataran Indonesia, PT Freeport Indonesia, and the Maramowe Weaiku Kamorowe Foundation to Preserve the Traditions and Culture of the Kamoro Tribe

As a True Icon of Indonesian Ecotourism that consistently prioritizes the blend of nature, culture and Indonesian society, the week of For You Papua - My Brother represents a combined effort by Plataran Indonesia and Freeport Indonesia to showcase Papuan culture as an integral part of equatorial Indonesian heritage.

Hosted at Hutan Kota by Plataran, Senayan, from October 27-29, 2021, the Kamoro Art Exhibition & Sale will highlight the cultural arts and traditions of the Kamoro tribe, Papua. The event will be officially opened by the Minister of State-Owned Enterprises of Indonesia (BUMN), along with a cultural speech by the Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology of Indonesia on October 27, 2021 at 7 PM.

In this exhibition at Hutan Kota by Plataran the public can enjoy, as well as purchase, a variety of carved wooden sculptures imported directly from Papua. As part of this series of events, the public can also experience firsthand the traditions and cultural heritage of the Kamoro tribe, watch documentaries and take part in a virtual talk show entitled "Youth as Papuan Cultural Preservation Movement" on October 28, 2021. Meanwhile, on October 29, 2021, a dialogue entitled “Fine Art of the Kamoro Tribe, Portrait of Papuan Cultural Heterogeneity” will feature several notable speakers: Luluk Intarti, representative of the Maramowe Weaiku Kamorowe Foundation; and Ghea Panggabean and Oscar Lawalata, well-known Indonesian fashion designers who often incorporate Indonesian ethnic elements in their works.

Famed for their hereditary traditions of wood carving, the Kamoro tribe is one of several inhabitants of the coastal region of Timika in Papua. To support their artistic traditions, PT Freeport Indonesia created the Maramowe Weaiku Kamorowe Foundation (the name itself means ‘young Kamoro carver’). Under the auspices of this foundation, more than 500 carvers and weavers receive guidance, direction, and the opportunity to showcase local culture on the international stage. The work programs carried out by this foundation also focus on socializing and preserving Kamoro culture.

Plataran Indonesia is one of the collaborators in the Kamoro Art Exhibition & Sale, and is enthusiastically involved in the organization of this series of events. This is in keeping with the three main pillars that have been the foundation of Plataran Indonesia since the inception of the company: nature, culture, and community. The company’s founders continually promote ecotourism as the DNA of Plataran Indonesia; positively impacting the economy, nature conservation efforts, and cultural preservation in society. Ecotourism is also a form of shared responsibility between the government and the private sector to provide sustainable social impacts.
