Exploring the Magnificent Bromo: A Journey Through Sunrise, Culture, and Sacred Rituals

Bromo has a magnificent landscape, added with the unique culture of the Tengger Tribe that still preserves a sacred ceremony, like Yadnya Kasada, a prayer for the ancient Gods with holy water Tirto Aji taken from a holy fountain in a sacred cave with the hope of prosperous and fertile future. This ceremony held every year on the 14th day of the month Kasada, refers to the Hindu Tengger calendar. By attending this ceremony, it can be a lifetime experience to dive into the Hindu Tengger culture.

Yet, the most popular activity among travellers who travel to Mount Bromo is to witness the first light there, this can be done almost all-year-round as long as the weather is friendly. We will give you some ideas for the trip to Bromo Sunrise. From Surabaya city centre to Bromo Desert is about 2.5 hours driving for around 130 kilometres, and if you are travelling from Malang, it will take around 1 hour and 45 minutes driving for around 50 kilometres.

Usually, an organised tour will pick you up in your accommodation at dawn and bring you to the sunrise point. There are several sunrise points to see the sunrise in Bromo, one of them is Pananjakan. After seeing the sunrise there, the tour lead will set the group off to the point where we should climb the stairs to look over the Bromo Crater, then after having pictures taken or just
enjoying the magnificent view, the group will stop by the Pura Luhur Poten temple on the way back from the crater. The next stop will be the savanna that locals usually called 'Teletubbies' Hills because of the resemblance to hills in the popular kids' television show. Last but not least, the group will stop by the well-known sand desert in Bromo, usually called Pasir Berbisik ('Whispering Sand').

We can opt for many choices of rides there that are offered for tourists and travelers to enjoy the vast sand desert around the crater, there are trail motorcycles, off-road jeeps, and horses. If you are joining a tour package, it will cost around 350 thousand rupiah per person for an open trip, and for a private trip it will cost around 1,600 thousand rupiah per group per trip.

In addition to that, Plataran Bromo, as one of the luxury accommodations in Bromo, has special activities to offer you while staying there. It is a Sacred Bromo trip, an encounter that will take you to another dimension of Bromo and witness the sunset at the Bromo savanna.
